Chelsea slumped to a miserable fifth successive defeat under Frank Lampard as Brentford again claimed west London bragging rights at Stamford Bridge.
Cesar Azpilicueta scored an unlucky own goal, and substitute Bryan Mbeumo scored on a breakaway to give the tenacious Bees another derby victory. Despite only having one shot on goal the whole game, the Bees broke a six-game losing streak and gave a boost to their rapidly dwindling European ambitions.
While Mauricio Pochettino, the former manager of Tottenham, is expected to succeed Lampard, another loss for Chelsea only adds to the turmoil already permeating the team.
Brentford has now won twice in as many seasons after an unforgettable 4-1 romp in SW6 one year ago, ending an 85-year wait for a victory at the Bridge.
