Joao Felix looks to be playing his way out of a permanent transfer to Chelsea.
His impressive debut against Fulham, and some tidy moments after that, convinced most fans that signing him would be a no-brainer. He has that touch of magic and creativity that we’ve been lacking perhaps since Eden Hazard left.
But since then we’ve seen more and more of him, and he’s gradually revealed his bad side – the same issues that led to Atletico Madrid being happy to loan him out in the first place.
For all his style there is sometimes a real lack of substance. Last night had the perfect example – picking the ball up deep on the left, Felix ghosted between players and dropped a silky nutmeg, only to then mess up the simple pass through on goal. It looked great, but led to nothing. It’s a pattern we’re seeing repeated all too often now, and in a team desperate for cutting edge, it looks particularly bad.
