Former England striker Michael Owen asserted that Chelsea's £600 million shopping spree was a "real expensive mistake."
The Blues were eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid on Tuesday night. With seven games remaining, they are currently in 11th place in the Premier League standings, 17 points below the top four.
That's in spite of a jaw-dropping hiring spree since the end of the previous campaign, which was topped by a £106.8 million bid for World Cup champion Enzo Fernandez in January.
It's incredible, isn't it, how much of a mistake they made buying so many players, and it's going to hit them where it hurts - in the pocket - because now they're going to have to get rid of players, BT Sport pundit Owen said after the 2-0 home defeat by Madrid that ended their European hopes for this season.
"They'll have to buy them off because some players won't want to leave. It was a really costly error.
Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole, and Owen all agreed that the club needed to purge, but they also acknowledged that it might be challenging in the near future.
When players are earning large salaries and have three, four, five, some six, or seven years left on their contracts, Ferdinand stated
Owen responded: “Well, they don’t, do they, so they’re going to have a problem for a few years now. They’re going to have players that they want out that they can’t get out.
“They’re going to have to get players out so they might have to get some of the players that they don’t really want to get rid of out.”
