Chelsea have reportedly agreed a £17.6 million ($22m) deal for attacking midfielder and winger Kendry Paez from Independiente del Valle.
The Blues will continue their focus on the future under new owner Todd Boehly by bringing on another young player. According to the Fabrizio Romano report, the 15-year-old will stay with his club in Ecuador for a further two years. Before making the Chelsea first squad, he most likely will spend some time in the Chelsea academy.
But given the size of the payment, he will come prepared.
Additionally, despite spending tens of millions of dollars on the transfer market, Chelsea has had trouble this year. They are hoping that high-priced additions like Enzo Fernando and Mykhailo Mudryk may learn from their mistakes in 2022–2023 and use that knowledge to propel their growth in the ensuing years.
Ecuador already have a host of talented players aged 25 or younger, including Moises Caicedo, Piero Hincapie and Pervis Estupinan. If Paez develops as hoped, the 2026 and 2030 World Cups could be special tournaments for the nation.
The rest of the season is all about player growth, considering Chelsea are no longer in contention for any silverware. Expect some of the Blues' younger players to get extra time on the pitch as the campaign winds down.
